Eileen’s Approach to Therapy
I believe successful therapy begins with the therapeutic relationship. My approach is called “person-centered” which means I believe in an individual’s inherit capacity and ability for growth and self-healing. To support this process, I work with clients to create a relationship built on trust and support. Using compassion and an open heart, I create a safe space for my clients to feel seen and heard, their thoughts and feelings validated and accepted.
Psychotherapy is also known as “talk therapy”, and its purpose is to help individuals better manage and overcome emotional distress and mental health challenges. It is a collaborative relationship between you, the client, and me, your therapist. The therapist’s role is not to give advice, but to help the client explore thoughts, feelings and behaviours so they may develop a better understanding of themselves, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. The work is collaborative, meaning therapist and client work together. As your therapist, I will walk along side you on your healing journey.
I use a range of approaches, and usually find I am combining approaches as each individual is unique and must be seen as such. Treatment plans are customized for the client, with their full participation, as we decide, together, on what approach to use.
We all live with stress. It’s part of the human condition. My role is to help you learn how to live with these stressors, and how to grow your resilience, so they cause you less anxiety. Stress can be made more manageable. We will work together to help you learn more effective ways to manage the factors contributing to your stress, and emotional distress. Using various tools and techniques, including mindfulness practices, you will learn effective coping skills to effectively enhance your overall well-bring.
