Introduction to Therapy

Words once considered psychology terms are now being used in everyday language. While I applaud the normalization of these words and phrases, it can lead to confusion. Below are a series of videos where I define and discuss many of the terms commonly used in psychotherapy.

Anxiety

Everyday challenges can cause people to worry, feel nervous and ruminate about the future. When these everyday feelings become too strong for our individual level of tolerance we can feel anxious. Eventually, if left uncontrolled, these feelings might interfere with daily activities. This video discusses the impact of anxiety, and how therapy can help an individual learn to control its affects, and increase their resilience and tolerance.

Depression

Everyone, at some point, will face situations which cause sadness or a low mood. When these feelings become intolerable, or cannot be overcome, they can lead to serious and even dangerous outcomes. This video discusses this serious topic.

If you are in imminent danger of self-harm please call 911.

If you need immediate support call 9-8-8, the free 24/7 crisis and suicide hotline with trained personnel.

Trauma

Trauma is a complex subject. There are many causes, it can occur in the past or present, it might be ongoing, and it could be personally experienced or witnessed. It exists on a spectrum. Trauma is complicated. This video is an introduction and only scratches the surface. If you feel you are suffering the effects of trauma please watch this video with caution. This can be a triggering subject.

Grief and Loss

Grief and loss occurs when a loved one dies, but it is so much more. Yes, it most commonly happens with the loss of a loved one, but it also occurs with the loss of a pregnancy, perhaps with a beloved family pet, or with the loss of a colleague or community member. Loss comes in all shapes and sizes.

Grief and loss can also happen with the loss of a career, a family home, or in the face of a natural disaster. There are also figurative losses, when an individual suffers the loss of an envisioned future, as can happen when one becomes ill or disabled, or loses their life partner.

Chronic Illness, Chronic Pain and Physical Disabilities

A large percentage of the population struggle with some form of chronic illness, pain or a disability. This is one of the most complex things that can happen to an individual. These issues equally affect people from every culture, all backgrounds and all populations. When chronic illness, pain and disability happen, they might be the result of a trauma, or cause trauma. They can cause feelings and symptoms of anxiety, depression, grief, loss, loneliness and isolation. Please reach out. Regaining control of your life, and management of your symptoms, is possible with support.

Self-Compassion

This is one of the least understood but most important things an individual can learn. Self-compassion is necessary. It helps to counteract feelings which arise from our inner critic, and it helps to promote wellness. Self-compassion involves self-care which is often mistaken as selfish. Learn more about self-compassion and how it can lead to stronger mental and emotional wellbeing.

Life Transitions

Life transitions are any events that when they happen in one's life they change the course of life itself. An illness and injury can cause one’s life to transition through lifestyle changes necessary to accommodate new realities and limitations. Individuals also transition their lives when divorce or the end of a relationship occurs, or when one moves/downsizes from a house to an apartment. Life transitions occur when children leave home (empty-nesters), when women enter menopause, if someone loses a job or when someone retires. Life events can feel disruptive, and support aids in adjustment.
